If you live in Chicopee, there is a good chance you know the name Ernest “Ernie” Laflamme. He retired in 2013 as the city treasurer after nearly 50 years, leaving an indelible imprint on his community. Now 84, Ernie said he knew it was time to call it a career when some of his own children had decided to retire! Clearly, it was not because he was slowing down. Even well into his eighties, Ernie says he feels great and looks forward to remaining active.
Over the years arthritic pain had taken its toll in Ernie’s left shoulder. He underwent shoulder surgery in March 2014. Meanwhile, Ernie had begun to experience pain in his right hip. When the pain became unbearable he met with his orthopedist Joshua Greenbaum, MD, of New England Orthopedic Surgeons. Ernie now underwent a hip replacement on December 30 at Baystate Medical Center.
Following surgery Ernie was transferred to Mary’s Meadow at Providence Place where he received physical and occupational therapy. After two weeks he was ready to go home, but not without continued support. He chose Porchlight VNA for skilled nursing, physical therapy and occupational therapy to complete his road to independence.
Porchlight’s Interdisciplinary Services
Porchlight’s experienced Physical Therapists (PTs), Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) developed a plan for Ernie to regain his strength and independence at home.
• RNs educated Ernie on pain management and oversaw adjustments in medications.
• PTs provided education and support for Ernie to continue his home recovery with a personalized exercise program. These exercises would increase range of motion, flexibility and strength in his hip.
• OTs came to Ernie’s home to assess any need for customized home equipment.
Outcome: Porchlight VNA was happy to help Ernie achieve his goals and we congratulate Ernie and his wife, Claire, as they celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on April 15.
In His Own Words: “The services were absolutely perfect. I’m satisfied.”
